Black Tom at short odds
Special correspondent Blenheim i Black Tom caused a stir when' he paid only 55c on the place j machine in winning the Ken Col-1 lins Handicap, for two-year-olds,, at Blenheim on Saturday. By Abridge Member from' Richella Black Tom had been a handsome winner at the recent) Rangitikei Hunt Club trials and* this reputation preceded him to I VVaterlea. There was $13,690 in the place! pool and Black Tom carried) 56262. The next most popular run-; ner. Bold Gift, carried $ll3O. There had been a delay with; a totalisator malfunction in the first event and the betting time, for the Collins Handicap (race! three) was shorter than usual. Consequently many on-course I punters did not get their bets! taken and thus the pool was dominated by T.A.B. money. This could have contributed to Black Tom’s 55c dividend, which! must have claims to being the. smallest ever recorded in New Zealand in recent times. Black Tom is raced in partnership by a former Foxton garage proprietor. Mr Noel Thomp-i son, and the Foxton trainer.! Harold Webby, who bred the colt.! Mr Thompson is currently oni holiday in th e United States and missed Black Tom’s winning run.
