On to the 2000

Bill Skelton and Red Terror have combined rewardingly this autumn. And it gave the durable, skilful Levin jockey special pleasure to find that a win on the big chestnut in the Manawatu Metric Mile on Saturdav should also give him the 1900th success of his great career. To cap the occasion Red Terror was firm each-way favourite and there was no doubt what would win once Skelton asked him for a little extra. Fraxy, the third favourite, had a delayed “release” from tight spot alongside the rails and finished doggedly for second, but Red Terror kept him out by three-quarters of a length. Bill Skelton has ridden more winners than any other New Zealand jockey. His memorable first victory was at Wingatui in October 1947 when, he rode Boolamskee to deadbeat with Lord Dundonald, which was ridden by the late Lex Hare.

His 1000th win was on Lord Ted at Gisborne in 1966.
