Freezing works dispute

Sir. — Today, after waiting 22 weeks to dispose of surnlus ewes to the freez-

ing works, I have been angered to learn that because of absenteeism at freezing works I must hold and feed them yet another four days. Imagine my feelings tonight upon reading the letter to you by J. Quirke. No reasonable farmer begrudges the freezing worker his high pay, but when even the lowest paid freezing workers are receiving more than double what many honest workers receive for their toil today, and with regular, needless stoppages throughout the industry, I would suggest to J. Quirke that farmers also need more than the smell of the “industry” if they are to continue to supply stock for the industry upon which he and thousands of other New Zealanders depend for their living. — Yours, etc.. G. A. INCH. April 6, 1978.
