Drivers’ signalling criticised

Driving in Christchurch would be a lot easier if drivers signalled clearly before turning or changing lanes, according to the senior city traffic officer (Mr E. E. Dunlop). “It is one aspect of Christchurch driving that is badly in need of improvement,” he said.

In a letter to “The Press,” a man calling himself a professional driver complained that very few drivers obeyed the regulation requiring them to

signal. He said that the Ministry of Transport had made only a “token” effort in enforcing the law. Mr Dunlop said that Ministry officers sometimes saw infringements of the law but were unable to do anything about them.

“They might be driving along a one-way street, or moving in the opposite direction, and there is nothing they can do,” he said. The Ministry made all efforts to catch offenders, he said, but officers could not be everywhere at the same time.
