Karamanlis overtures to Europe

NZPA-Reuter Rome The Greek Prime Minister (Mr Constantine Karamanlis has ended his second tour of European Common Market capitals by winning Italian support for his goal of joining the Community at the start of 1980. The Italian Prime Minister (Mr Giulio Andreotti) told reporters after a twohour meeting with the Greek leader that he supported the Common Market’s timetable of completing negotiations this year and ratifying Greek membership in 1979.

“The Italian Government has reaffirmed ... its undertaking to favour the entry of this friendly country in the family of the European Community,” he declared.

“We are convinceil that Greek membership will be an important element in the destiny of the community,” Mr Andreotti said.

Mr Karamanlis expressed his satisfaction at the assurances he had received that the question of Greek membership of the E.E.C. would not be linked to any other problem — an apparent reference to applications to join the Community by Portugal and Spain.
