Indonesian leads chess tournament
PA Wellington Miguel Quintero* (Argentina), showed his grandmaster class yesterday as ne took command of his game against Merahad Shirazi (Iran) and won with ease at the Burroughs Computer* grandmaster tournament in Wellington. After 25 moves he trapped Shirazi’s queen, which had been trying to grub pawns in a raid on the queen-side.
Wellington’s international, Murray Chandler, drew with Eugene Tone (Philippines) after some clever play. Chandler sacrificed a pawn to seize the initiative and eventually regained hl* material to gain a clearly drawn position. Ewen Green (Auckland) drew in his game with-the Indonesian international master, Herman
Suradlradja. while two eth'l New Zealander*, Vernon Smal and Ortvin Sarapu, also drew their game. An Aucklander, Richard Sub ton adjourned his game a pawn up against the Iranian intern* tional master, Mershad Sharif, after a hard, complicated battle In a second-roud game played late on Thursday, Quinteros, Wh4 arrived late for the tournament, adjourned a game with Jacobin Sampouw (Indonesia), In an un clear position after both player) had made mistakes when shot) of time.
After three rounds, Suradirsd.H leads with two points, whin Torre, Chandler, Sarapu, Small and Green all have one and 1 half. Other player* with gam' l in hand could catch up with the* player*.
