Flat fire survivors ‘lucky’
The occupants of a flat, (which was badly damaged by fire early yesterday morn- ! ing are lucky to be alive, according to a Fire Service spokesman. “How they ever escaped we will never know,” he said.
The fire, at 245 Papanui Road, completely gutted one room, and two persons were taken to hospital and treated for minor burns and smoke inhalation. They were both discharged yesterday after treatment.
Fire broke out in the flat soon after midnight. The 14 occupants were forced to flee, some -clad only in sheets they could grab from their beds.
The house was well alight when two fire engines arrived from the St Albans and Central fire stations. Fire-safety officers were yesterday investigating the cause of the fire.
