Tough pairings for foursomes
The last three successful teams in the Canterbury men’s golf foursomes will be paired again for the provincial championship at Coringa tomorrow.
John Allin and Mike Small will defend their title and will play in the same group as the 1976 champions, Geoff Saunders and E Dennis Beggs, both Freyberg representatives. Immediately behind them will be the father-and-son combination of Andrew and Simon Robinson, who won the event in 1975 and narrowly failed to repeat that success last year. There are some powerful pairs who have the ability to perform well should they “click” as a foursome. The top Rucsley pair, Bruc Taylor and James Angus, will be together and Taylor will be seeking his third success. He won the event with Gavin Titmus in 1970 and 1972.
Mark Street, playing exceptionally well at present, and his twin brother, Brent, should give Harewood a big say in the final result. The Christchurch club has an interesting foursome in the powerful John Williamson and Murray Brown.
Avondale’s top Woodward Cup players, Ricky Vincent and Alan Williams, could cause an upset, while Waimairi Beach will have a strong show in Fred Poskitt and John Ellerm. The Russley pair, Peter McDonald and Roger Sisson, might prove a good back-up team for Taylor and Angus.
