Fellmongery effluent below par
The North Canterbury Catchment Board and Regional Water Board is not at all pleased with the quality ot effluent being dischargeci into the Kaiapoi River by the North Canterbury Wool and Fellmongery Company.
The conditions imposed in the firm s water right "are barely, if ever, met,” said the board’s water committee! chairman (Mr H. E. Connor)’ yesterday.
He noted that the company; had spent monev on improvements “but there areother things it should be doing as well?” Settling ponds to be in-: stalled in the future will al-: leviatc the problem to some extent but it is uncertain how much the quality of the' discharge can be improved.
In its inspection of the. lower Waimakarin River' the board had scheduled a ! visit to the site. "Still, we must agree there! has been a vast improve-i rnent over the last three years,” said the chairman! (Dr W. R. Holmes). .1 II
