Better luck this time
The Christchurch motorcycling enthusiast, Bob Burns, aged 66, has reached Auckland without incident on his second attempt to ride) round New Zealand on his) three-cylinder 750 Yamaha. ) Mr Burns, who set the) world’s fastest speed of! 176.5 m.p.h. for a sidecar on I the Bonneville Salt Flats ini 1966. slipped quietly away onj the first leg of the trip on) Sunday. This time he plans) to complete the 5282 km journey in 15 days — five days faster than he had planned for his original trip last October.
That trip ended prematurely when Mr Burns crashed just north of Murchison, the result of a blackout caused by an ill-fitting safety helmet. Fie spent several weeks in Nelson Hospital recovering from a broken ami and pelvis, but vowed that he would complete what he had begun.
Last time Mr Burns travelled first to Bluff and then up the West Coast. This time he is travelling the reverse route, going from) Christchurch through Wei-, lington. Wanganui, and; Hamilton to Auckland. He is making the journey to celebrate 50 years as an active motor-cyclist.
