Winners stand out in Leonard Stakes

By

G. K. YULE

Dame Brornac. Silky Wave and Carlotta Lopez, the only winners in the field, look to have bright prospects in sharing in the $4OOO stake attached to the New Zealand Leonard Memorial Stakes, for two-year-old fillies at the Cheviot meeting at Rangiora today.

Dame Brornac was a run*, way winner at Palmerston North on March 22 at her lone race start. She showed pleasing form at the Addington trials on Tuesday and from her reasonable barrier draw of No 9 she should be capable of a bold bid. Dame Brornac is one of three runners to be produced bv the Tetnple.on trainer, Reg Curton, who has high hopes for Rosemarie Bro-

.mac, another filly by Timely I Knight. Rosemarie Brornac has shown sound form at trials and she, too, has drawn well at No. 3. Rosemarie Brornac is raced by Mr Em. Edwards, of Ontario, who paid a big price for the sister to Montini Brornac. Mr Edwards plans to attend the Cheviot meeting to see his filly make hei race debut in the hands ct, ‘Mike de Filippi.

1 Wise Lea, by Dryham Lea !is the other Curtain representative. She has gone w?'l at trials, but might not be I quite as reliable as her stablemates. But if she does move off correctly she could show up. However, Silky Wave, from Robert Dunn’s team, and Carlotta Lopez, trained by Des Grice, will be more with betters. Silky 'Wave was a decisive winner 'at Hawera on March 27. The daughter of Tiger Wave is i highly r a t e( j b v [i er young trainer and much interest ; will centre ip her showing. Carlotta Lopez, by Lopez Hanover, has shown much ability and was a first-up winner. Since then she has had a fourth and a seventh from two starts. She has drawn the second line, bufi could still go well. The Invercargill filly, Anna Lobe!!, as well as Roy- 1 don Wren and Spartan I Queen, now with Doody; Townley, are others ex-i pected to race prominently. I
