Consultation on proposed tariff
PA Wellington New Zealand was consulting Australia and other interested countries on the proposed new tariff rates on i motor vehicle spare parts, said the Minister of Trade and Industry (Mr AdamsSchneider) yesterday. ) He was commenting on a [reported- statement by the [Australian Minister for Overseas Trade (Mr Anthony) in Canberra on Wednesday. “The position is that the new tariff due to come into force on July 1 contains certain rates on motor [vehicle spare parts and on [other items in the tariff 'which are different from the ] present tariff rates,” Mr Adams-Schneider said. | “In accordance with our [agreement on preferences [with Australia, New Zealand 'must consult it on these proposals. Australian officials [have been briefed by New 'Zealand officials on the situation and assured of New [Zealand’s intention to consult at the appropriate time,” he said. The aim was to complete the consultations so that any adjustments that might be necessary could be made before the new tariff came into force on July 1. The Minister said he expected the matter to be discussed at the N.A.F.T.A.
officials’ meeting in Canberra next week.
“Since Mr Anthony has raised this we will, of course, be ready to discuss it with Australian Ministers and to hear what they have to say to assist us in our evaluation of how best to proceed,” he said.
