Talented young pacers clash again at Rangiora

By

G. K. Yule

Transglo and Jaunty Hanover, two of the more-talented up-and-coming pacers in Canterbury, will meet for the sixth lime in a little more than two months in the Cheviot Cup tomorrow. In spile of laststart failures in the Greymouth Cup on March 6, they should be two of the best chances in this 3200 m test.

So far Jaunty Hanover has finished in front of Transglo in three of their meetings, while they have dead-heated once.

Transglo’s only success at the expense of Jaunty Hanover came in the Nelson Cup. That day Jaunty Hanover made one of his rare lapses at the start and was nevei in contention, finishing eleventh. However, two days

later, when Transglo gave Jaunty Hanover a start of I.om, they dead-heated foi first in an exciting finish after a fast 2400 m. Jaunty Hanover won the Marlborough Cup, and Transglo, from 10m, was a rather unlucky fifth. Then Jaunty Hanover won at Methven on February 14, with Transglo back in fourth place.

Neither horse “fired” in the Greymouth Cup, won by Lucky Chance, Jaunty Hanover finished eighth, while Transglo was ninth and last. Both have had a chance to freshen since then and back to grass track racing they should prove more than a match for most in the race. Most opposition to them could come from the speedy Bad Luck, which has had a win and two seconds from his last three starts. His most recent race was at Addington Raceway on March 25 when he made the pace and beat all but Bronze Queen over 2000 m. Bad Luck is not an easy horse to rate as he seldom relaxes in his races. However, he should be settled as result of his recent races and could well test Transglo and Jaunty Hanover.

Scot Fair, Drifted In and Dreamy Boy appeal most of the others, but a bold run from Paula Brigade, which has raced particularly well on previous trips to Rangiora, will not surprise. Betting will be well spread in the second leg. the Rangiora Handicap, which has drawn a capacity field for the sprint contest. All Spice, Eisiam ‘ form a likely trio, but they by no means exhaust the possibilities in what looks to be an extremely open race.
