Title to Aust. shooter
The Brisbane marksman, Bill Stevens, became the second Australian to win a title at the national trap shooting tournament at Yaldhurst yesterday. Following the success of Neil Berry in the New Zealand International Shooting Union ball trap championship on Sunday, Stevens won the New Zealand pointsscore championship after a shoot-off with Bill Brunton (Timaru) and Bruce Anderson (Rotorua).
These three had all recorded possibles of 150 from the 50 targets. In the shootoff, Anderson fell at the sixth target and Brunton dropped out at the tenth target, leaving Stevens the winner.
Seven competitors all achieved 149 in the championship. They were Gary Denning (Waitemata), Roly Winter (Waititiri), Gavin Paton (Auckland Metropolitan), Jack Hedley (Nightcaps), Cliff Fyers (Hamilton), Des Cosgrove (Australia) and the national association secretary, Sid Hanson (Waitemata). This was the first time a points-score has been shot in Christchurch.
As a preview for the national single-rise championship today, one of the premier events of the tournament, a 20-target single rise sweep off 18 metres was held, with 20 possibles being recorded.
