Ramp at bridge

Sir, — The lack of a ramp off the Bridge of Remembrance to Cambridge Terrace is a major error in reconstruction. There is a position for one on the northern side where an opening has been boarded up. The new steps are very steep and not suitable for the elderly and people with limb disabilities, or for those hi wheel chairs. A few years ago this city was concerned and progressive in the elimination of difficult footways and crossings. — Yours, etc., M. C. BUTLER. March 29, 1978. [The City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) replies: “The provision of a ramp has been

considered over a period and a number of alternative proposals produced. One of the main difficulties is that any ramp would have to be very long and would end up at mid block, unless it was a rather complex shape. Consequently, the original intention that a ramp be constructed is unlikely to be achieved. The Aged Persons Welfare Council has recently indicated that it would prefer steps rather than a ramp and the possibility of reconstructing the existing north steps at an easier grade is currently being reviewed.”]
