Home has a lot of friends

By SANDY SOUTHON The year Canterbury University students gave their Procesh funds of £4444 to the Cholmondeley Childrens’ Home in Governor’s Bay was a milestone for the home, said the past-president of the home, Mr C. L. Paterson.

It marked the beginning of a real civic interest in the Cholmondeley Home, and the start of an annual appeal which will be held again tomorrow.

The money the students gave almost 20 years ago was used to pav off a bank overdraft of £3OOO and to start a laundry to make the home more self-sufficient.

Mr Paterson, who was president of the home for almost 20 years before he resigned in February, said he believes that the home’s strength lies in its “selfhelp” concept. The Cholmondeley Home had lots of friends who helo with the appeal, either as collectors or by providing produce for the stall in the Square. Businesses had also been remarkably faithful, even in these hard economic times, said Mr Paterson. People were prepared to give because they knew the money went to the home it-

! self and the six members of (the staff. ( Mr Paterson said that many of the children at the home went there from broken homes, or when their mother was sick. "Cholmondeley Home relieves the parents of the worry of looking after their children for a short time until they can get back on their feet again,” said Mr Paterson. ' The average stay of a child , is four to six weeks although (some stay longer. I The home gets no subsidy (from the Government other (than a small grant for each

child. Parents pay only what they can afford. If that is nothing, the child is still accepted. Several children from a family can also be taken to save separating them. In most cases they enjoy being at the home, which has its own school and a teacher. Mr Paterson said that anyone could visit Cholmondeley Home and he would like to see more members of the public there. Last year's street appeal raised $ll,OOO and Mr Paterson hopes that tomorrow’s appeal will get a good response.
