Fire burns out reserve
Fire burnt through a] fledgling scenic reserve 'on Arapawa Island in the Marl-i borough Sounds, last week. | According to a Forest Ser-! vice spokesman, the fire] started as a burn-off on; • Thursday morning. It got out j of control and swept through i scrub behind the old whaling! station at Whekenui before leaping a ridge and burning down towards Kilmarnock. About 20 men and two helicopters fought the blaze, including a Forest Service fire crew, Sounds fire wardens, and local residents. The Forest Service spokesman said the fire had been; j contained, but had burnt] [through a scenic reserve; j which was still at scrubl j stage. _____ •
