Peruvians look at N.Z. national parks
i Timaru reporter Three Peruvians on a s visit to New Zealand as part of a technical aid > programme to Peru, will s spend three days at Mount t Cook next week. They are i now travelling in the > North Island. I With them are national , parks staff and members . of the Lands and Survey 3 Department head office staff. The visitors, specialists in their respective fields, are Carlos Ponce (director of conservation in Peru), Gustavo Ruiz (co-ordina-tor for Manu National Park in Peru), and Manuel Rios (a lecturer at Molina University, Lima). The chief ranger at
Mount Cook National Park headquarters (Mr B. W. Thomas) said that discussions would centre on national park and reserve management, tourism in national parks, and search and rescue. “Mount Cook village will be used as an example of village development,” said Mr Thomas. An aerial inspection of the park was planned before the Peruvian executives left for visits to the Waitaki Lakes recreaticm area and the Otago goldfields. “They will go to Westland and National Park, study noxious animal control in Fiordland, and the impact of hydro-electric schemes on national ! parks,” Mr Thomas said.
