Sportsman dies
A prominent basketball player, Simon Alexander Guthrie, aged 21, was found dead after what the police believe to be an overdose of a drug yesterday morning. A senior detective was called to a flat at 21 Scarborough Road, Sumner, after the body was found but the police said later that there were no suspicious circumstances. ties Guthrie was a regular Canterbury representative. He was a member of the line-up which won the New Zealand championship two seasons ago and was also in the team when it finished runner-up in the national championship last season. Guthrie first played basketball at Christchurch Boys’ High School and was a member of the A grade High School Old Boys’ team from the time he left school four years ago.
