Landslide success for Miss Waring
PA Hamilton Miss Marilyn Waring is relieved about her landslide National Party nomination at Te Awamutu for the new Waipa seat. She won the nomination in the first ballot, receiving overwhelming support from the 174 voting delegates. The other three candidates were men. Her selection was greeted by a standing ovation from more than 700 people who packed the Te Awamutu College Hall for the meeting. Miss Waring, aged 25, the youngest member of the House, was elected to Parliament for the first time in 1975 when she won the Raglan seat with a majority of 3756. She has an honours degree in political science from
Waikato University and has worked as an information officer for the National Party in Wellington. The Raglan electorate disappeared after a boundary reshuffle last year. The new Waipa electorate includes part of the Raglan electorate but also takes in part of King County. It includes the urban areas of Te Awamutu, Cambridge, and Otorohanga, but because of its strong rural influence is regarded as a safe National seat. On Monday evening each candidate spoke for 10 minutes and answered questions set by the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) and the party’s president (Mr G. A. Chapman). The results of the ballot were secret, known only to the regional secretary (Mr T. Barber) and four elected
scrutineers. But for Miss Waring to have won selection in the first ballot the other three candidates must have shared less than half the delegates’ votes. After the selection announcement, Miss Waring said she had been confident of her election but was a little worried her figures might have been wrong. “You never know until the result is announced,” she said. Her immediate reaction to the result was one of relief, she said, close to tears and surrounded by congratulatory bouquets of flowers.
Miss Waring said she was confident of success in November, and that her election would be “very easy”. She called for solidarity in the electorate.
