Squid boats collide
A Japanese squid boat damaged in a collision at sea made an emergency dash for Lyttelton yesterday with a gaping hole in her bow. The damaged boat, the 200-tonne Daitel Maru No. 21, arrived in port at 2 p.m. with a tarpaulin stuffed in the hole torn in her bow. 2m above the water line. It is believed she was fishing off the east coast of the South Island when she ran into another fishing boat, the Koyo Mam No. 81, on Monday night. The Koyo Maru had suffered an electrical breakdown and her crew were using torches to make her presence known. However, they were not seen in time to avoid a collision. It is not known where the Koyo Maru was struck but it is believed she was not severely damaged. The Daitei Maru is expected to be at Lyttelton until Friday, undergoing emergency repairs.
