Tennis girls in quandary
The Canterbury Country tennis team has a problem on its hands as it approaches the quadrangular tournament against West Coast, North Otago and Marlborough this week-end. Wilding Park this week-end. Three of the four girls who have been chosen to form the women’s sectiori of the team already have appointments with city clubs for the last round of the women’s senior competition on Saturday. The players involved in this tug-of-war are Nicky Robinson, a North Canterbury girl who plays for Elmwood, and the Lewth waite sisters, Lynette and Phillippa (Little River), who are regular members of the United team. The final round of the competition would founder if the girls decide to play for Country. The difficulty is that Saturday’s inter-club matches are a continuation of the December 17 round, which was interrupted by rain, and the rules say that clubs must use the same players for a resumed tie. Both the tournament and the inter-club matches are scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
The outcome of the competition will depend on the results of the last round. Elmwood (67 points) will play Avonside (62), with United (57) looking for a substantial win against Beckenham to close the gap. Caroline Dalzell (Hurunui) is the other member of the Country women’s team, and the men are M. Beaumont (Ellesmere), S. Anderson (Hurunui), S. Bennett (MidCanterbury), and S. Adair (Ellesmere).
