New catamaran prominent
Colin and Gavin Cooke performed prominently in their new catamaran, Freedom Machine, when the Banks Peninsula Cruising Club raced to Pigeon Bay and back during the week-end.
The impressive debut by Freedom Machine came after a fine display in extremely light conditions just after the fleet left the Pigeon Bay heads on the return journey on Sunday. While the other craft were virtually becalmed, Freedom Machine sneaked through to take the lead.
However, when the northeasterly wind freshened, Freedom Machine’s lack of sail area —it w-as rigged only with a Trailer Yacht spinnaker—was a handicap, and the weUperformed Chantal (Don Dalton) caught and passed the catamaran on the way back to Lyttelton. Galanta (Les Bachopi had taken line honours in the race to Pigeon Bay on Saturday,
when the airs were light and inconsistent. On both days the first division boats soon made up the 30min they conceded to the second division at the starts. Handicap honours were well distributed, although Pandora (Wayne Saville and Malcolm Field) gained a first and a third on first division corrected times, and won the fleet handicap on Saturday. . Results:—
