Delay on land use queried

Vacant Christchurch City Council land along Pages Road and near the Bexley rubbish tip should at least be used for recreation if it could not be sold immediately as housing sections, several councillors said. It was unwise to sell 17 sections next to the tip until nearby tipping had stopped, according to a report from the City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular), and it might be at last five years before they could be sold. Demolition materials would be dumped at the rear of the sections over the next year to 18 months, to form a partial buffer zone, but it was unlikely that work would be completed there before 1983. Cr Vicki Buck said that the last word councillors had was that sales could begin sometime this year, and the new policy had not come before any committee.

The committee chairman (Cr Mollie Clark) said that councillors had been “led to believe that subdivision was more or less right around the corner.” The Mayor (Mr H. G. Hay) agreed that had been the understanding.

Councillors asked for clarification of the new policy, and a report on possible use of the vacant land in the meantime.
