One of the largest civil engineering projects on the Chatham Islands in recent years was actually carried out by the New Zealand Army. Soldiers from the Third Field Engineering Squadron rebuilt and realigned the Te Awainanga bridge as one task during their annual camp. The Army’s assistance made the project feasible for the county council.
