Cigarette suspect in forest fire
Fire destroyed a big area of grass, scrub, and fallen trees in the Bottle Lake plantation yesterday afternoon.
Firemen from several brigades spent four hours fighting the fire which broke, out about 2.30 p.m.
The cause of the outbreak was not known last evening, but firemen suspect it might have been started by a cigarette butt thrown away by someone passing through the plantation — a similar explanation to the cause of the big Rakaia Gorge fire at the week-end.
The fire was attended by six engines — from Headquarters, St Albans, Sumner, New Brighton, and Brooklands. Two water tenders, from the Waimairi County Council and the North Canterbury Catchment Board, were called in. The fire was under control 'by 6.30 p.m. but County Council workmen were expected to stay at the scene overnight.
