, NZPA-Reuter Rome > The Italian police have ' smashed a gang of forgers ’ who thev believe flooded several European countries with millions of dollars in . counterfeit 3USIOO notes. During a simultaneous dawn swoop on five cities — Genoa, Turin. Allesandria, Pavia, and Naples — the police arrested 25 people and confiscated equipment which the forgers used to turn genuine SUSI notes into SUS 100 notes. The police said that the forgers had used a bleach and colouring system to to erase the print of a $1 note and then overprint it with the $lOO denomination. The dawn raid came after months of investigations by Italian police, Interpol, and American counterfeit experts, who also carried out inquiries in France and Belgium. Also among the haul were 100 forged ninteenth-century Mexican gold dollars which have great value for collectors, the police said.
