H.P. sales increase by 14 p.c.
PA Wellington Hire-purchase sales last year were up almost 14 per cent by value on 1976. But hire-purchase television set sales slumped, according to figures released by the Department of Statistics. The value of goods sold by surveyed businesses on hire purchase for 1977 was 5449 M, compared with $395M in 1976. During the December quarter last year surveyed hire purchases were $124.4M, about SBM higher than in the same quarter in 1976. Motor-vehicle sales rose 21.1 per cent, while those of household and other personal effects dropped 3.1 per cent. Plant and machinery sales dropped 21.7 per cent and television sets 44 per cent. The hire-purchase aggreements made in the last quarter, the average coverage on television sets was $468, and for motorvehicles $3199. In the corresponding quarter of 1976, the figures were $442 and $2304 respectively. The department said the survey was not a complete [ coverage of hire-purchase i trading, and the category I of motor-vehicles included ’ . such things as caravans I and tractors.
