Canty retains golf title
Canterbury retained ita South Island junior golf title by 32 strokes after an unexpected and strong challenge from Southland on the first day. Canterbury made sure of victory with an outstanding display in the third round yesterday. Led by Its captain, Mark Street, wno scored a three under par 70. the best four scores of the Canterbury juniors added up to only two strokes over par. Southland, through excellent golf from Kevil. Potts and Bruce Soulsby in particular, took second place from Otago, which was expected to present the main threat, and Mid-South Canterbury.
Although th# combined team finished last, it had the distinction of having the outstanding junior golfer, Gordon Smith, aged 18, who had the best gross total of 298. It gave him equal third placing in the South Island stroke championship held in conjunction with the teams’ event.
