Indies 301 ahead
NZPA-Reuter Port of Spain The West Indies pounded their way to a first-innings lead of 301 on the second day of the first cricket test against Australia yesterday. They bowled out Australia for 90 on Saturday and by the close yesterday were 391 for nine. But the Australians’ position was not quite as desperate as at one stage seemed likely. At tea, with Clive Lloyd and Alvin Kallicharran in full flight, the West Indies were 313 for three. At this point a score of over 500 was on the cards, but Lloyd went to the first ball after tea and wickets then tumbled cheaply. Jeff Thomson, Bruce Yardley and Jim Higgs finished with three apiece.
Any venom that was left in the pitch from Saturday had certainly gone by lunch when the West Indies were 186 for three. Throughout the afternoon Lloyd and Kallicharran pounded the bowling, keeping the runs coming at one-a-minute in a chanceless display of controlled power. Lloyd made 86 while Kallicharran went on to 127, his ninth test century which also saw him past the 3000run mark in tests. AUSTRALIA , First Innings G. Wood c Haynes b Croft 2 C.
