Phillips into team
John Phillips, the Old Collegians batsman, has been preferred to two other Canterbury batsmen, Tony Collins and Geoff Smith, for the Shell Trophy final against Auckland. Phillips’s inclusion in the 12 for the match starting at Lancaster Park on February 17 was a mild surprise. He has not been anv more consistent than Collins and Smith in club cricket in recent weeks, but batted well for Canterbury B earlier in the season.
Dayle Hadlee, who has a shoulder injury, has been included in the team, subject to his being fully fit. If he is unable to play there could be a clue to his replacement in the names of the bowlers the selectors have asked to practise with the team at Lancaster Park this week. lan Wilson, David Trist, Gerald Cummings, Steve Bateman and Andrew Nuttall have been invited to the practices. Bateman will be overseas when the match starts so cannot be considered and it is unlikely Nuttall, a leftarm spinner, would be included. Of the other three Trist has just begun playing senior cricket after a spell of two years, and as a former Canterbury and New Zealand bowler, could be considered ahead of Wilson and Cummins. The 12 named by the selectors for the final are: Maurice Ryan (captain), Peter Coman, Barry Hadlee, Murray Parker, Paul McEwan, Bevan Congdon, David Stead, Richard Hadlee. Davie Hadlee, Stephen Boock, Phillips and Warren Eddington. Because the final is over four days it is likely the selectors will prefer to strengthen the batting rather than the bowling, so Phillips would seem assured of a place in the team. Eddington looks the likely twelfth man. There were rumours on Saturday that Keith Thomson might be included in the team, and that his name bad caused a split among the selectors, Messrs John Grocott. Don McKendrv and lan Cromb. However Mr Grocott denied this last evening, saying Thompson was only one of several players considered for the team. “I scotch any rumours that there was a split among the selectors, That is completely unfounded.”
