Crucial women’s tennis games
A crucial match in the inter-club championship and a tight finish in the individual contest will create a good deal of interest in women’s senior tennis at Wilding Park today.
The joint competition leaders, United and Elmwood, will match shots in this penultimate round and the leading singles players, Robyn Hunt (Elmwood) and Shirley Haig (United), will be at loggerheads for the Bank of New Zealand grand prix prize. Haig and Hunt are equal second, one point behind
Jane Wilson (Avonside), A clash of sports denied Haig a chance of taking the lead: she passed up the ranking matches on Thursday evening for the start of the in-door-hockey competition. Wilson, who also plays hockey for Haig’s club, Carlton, plumped for tennis on Thursday and, although she was beaten by her Avonside colleague, Jean Macdonald, she gained a point to put her in front.
Hunt took two points for a big win against Stephanie Field to draw level with Haig in the grand prix.
United and Elmwood are ; locked together in the lead of the senior competition i but Avonside, the titleholder, is only six points ' behind and is poised to con- i tribute to an exciting finish. 1 Avonside should account i for Edgeware today and it is i two matches up in its post- (
poned contest against Elmwood, which is due to be resumed next week. Grand prix points are: Wilson 31, Hunt and Haig each 30, Phillippa Lewthwaite (United) 28, Macdonald 27, Lynette Lewthwaite (United) 25, Ann Davidson (Beckenham) 24.
