Consultants on abortion

Sir, — Addressing the biennial conference of the Hospital Boards’ Association, the Minister of Health (Mr Gill) is reported as saying: “There is nothing to prevent the appointment of doctors as certifying consultants who have expressed personal views on the legislation or on abortion.” This statement is grossly misleading to the general public. The Contraception, Sterilisation and Abortion Act, 1977, Section 30 (5), says: “The following views shall be considered incompatible. . ; (a) That an abortion should not be performed in any circumstances. (b) That the question of whether an abortion should or should not be performed in any case is entirely a matter for the woman and a doctor to decide.” This, in essence, leaves very few doctors who could possibly accept the position honestly and in good faith. — Yours, etc., JOCELYN V. HAY. Student Health and Counselling Service, University of Canterbury. March 2, 1978.
