Big sale of barley for export
The sale of more than 36,000 tonnes of barley for export was annouced yesterday. No figure has been, put on 'the value of the barley, I which is believed to. be ; s u r p 1 u s to local ‘requirements. The general manager of the Canterbury Malting Company, Ltd (Mr H. P. Kearney) said that 9000 tonnes of the barley, which had been sold by the Canterbury Seed Company and the Canterbury Malting Company in conjunction,
would be loaded at Timaru next week into the Great Brisbane. It would go to South-East Asia. About 6000 tonnes was already in the Timaru Harbour Board’s silos awaiting the arrival of the ship. Some 1400 tonnes . of this was delivered to the silos in nine hours on Thursday. A further shipment will be made about the middle of next month. It will be loaded at Timaru and Lyttelton and will be for Europe. A third consignment will
be dispatched in June but its, destination has not been' disclosed. Mr Kearney said 1 that the three shipments! would total more than 36,-1 000 tonnes.
It would mean, he said.: that it would be possible to I take delivery from farmers! of a substantial quantity ofj barley in the next few days. The announcement of thisexport business is seen as timely, as it appears that; with yields of malting barley running at record levels this; season there will be big harvest. Apart from earning! valuable overseas exchange, I it will also enable farmers 1 to make delivery of their grain earlier than had been anticipated, and should help their cash flows and; liquidity positions.
