Canadians make a rare appearance

The rather odd looking destroyer which sailed into Lyttelton yesterday, with little green men running round her decks and the Canadian ensign fluttering in a freshening southerly, is Canada’s anti-submarine weapon in a nuclear age. She is the “Restigouche” class destroyer H.M.C.S. Kootenay, built in 1952 and now just completing a tour of duty south of the Equator, engaging in war games with the Australian. New Zealand and United States Navies. Her odd shape is the result of an extensive refit in 1970 after she was crippled by an engine-room explosion while on a fullpower trial in the midAtlantic. The Kootenay was towed back to Plymouth for emergency repairs. She then returned to Halifax, and while full-scale repairs were being made it. was decided to convert her into an “Improved Restigouche Class” destroyer. This involved lengthening her by six feet and enclosing as much of the open deck space as possible to protect crews from nuclear fall-out.

The touch of green in the uniform, instead of the traditional navy blue, is the result of a bold and controversial move by Canadian politicians to cut down defence spending by intergrating the services —- making it difficult for the uninitiated to distinguish between a Canadian sailor, soldier, or airman.
