Medical award

NZPA London A British charity has set aside 20,000 ($NZ37,600) annually to pay for exchange visits between British and New Zealand medical research workers. The Medical, Research Council of New Zealand, based in Dunedin, will administer the New Zealand part of the exchange scheme which will also involve Irish and Australian researchers, the Wellcome Trust announced in London yesterday. “We believe that the

strong associations of the past have weakened to the disadvantage of the countries involved and to the general strength of medical research,” a spokesman for the trust said. The Wellcome Trust was established in 1936 and runs on funds from the Wellcome Foundation, a British pharmaceutical manufacturing company. The exchange awards will be available mainly for short visits of up to three months by active researchers but are not intended for post-docto-ral overseas training.
