Effects of drought
As well as reports of very much reduced hay cuts this season, a public meeting on the drought situation at Culverden this week heard that farmers had sent cattle out to grazing and were also intending to reduce their sheep flocks.
No fewer than eight reports were made of smaller hay cuts. They ranged from where no hay had been made at all. In most cases the hay saved amounted to a quarter of normal or less. In two cases fanners reported sending cattle out to grazing on the Peninsula and there were also reports of flocks being cut by 500 to 700, 1500 and 600 sheep.
