Potato shortage foreseen
Potato supplies in New Zealand may well swing from a position of surplus into a shortage.
The chairman of the New Zealand Potato Growers’ Federation, Mr R. G. Chambers, said this week that reports from all over the country’ indicated that
there could be a shortfall of potatoes by the middle of die year, particularly if drought conditions continued. On top of a 15 to 20 per cent reduction in the area under the crop this season, he said that there could possibly be a 10 per cent reduction in yield.
In a statement issued recently the federation said that the major growing areas were experiencing continuing dry conditions, which was having the effect of reducing yields of crops which would be dug later in the season.
