The Christchurch St John Ambulance service has added three new vehicles to its fleet at a total cost of more than $43,000. The three new machines — a specially designed walk-through ambulance, a wheelchair ambulance, and a control car — will matw the Christchurch fleet one of the most modern in the country. All three vehicles will go into service today. The walk-through ambulance was the most expen-

sive. It was designed according to the latest overseas trends and specially adapted for Christchurch conditions. Fully equipped, it cost $23,000. The VB-powered unit has more headroom than conventional ambulances, more sophisticated medical gear and better inside lighting. Its main new feature is a door between the cab and the rear of the ambulance, which allows the crew to help nurses with patients en route to hospital.

The wheelchair ambulance, built for $14,000 with funds given by the A.F.W. and J. !¥L Jones Trust, can carry six wheelchairs. The control car is the first bought by the ambulance service in Christchurch. Following the example set by the Fire Service, it will be used by senior officers to establish on-the-spot control at the scene of serious road accidents and other major incidents. The car will also carry extra medical supplies.
