Police, Army in exercise
Timaru reporter Eighty Territorial infantrymen will be tested in an escape-and-evasion exercise next month. The exercise, which wiT be run by the Army and police, will involve more than 130 persons. There will be a simulated escape by the infantrymen some 48km from the Timaru Airport at Levels which the “escapers” will attempt to reach within 48 hours without being detected. The exercise has been planned by the Officer Commanding C Company, Captain I. G. Schofield, and the commander of the Timaru police district (Superintendent E. C. Welsh). The “escapers” will be hunted by the police, provosts. and a reconnaissance platoon. The exercise will be an invaluable test of map reading, compass work, night navigation, endurance and physical fitness of the respective groups.
