Eighth S.M. for Chch
Christchurch will have an eighth magistrate, the Minister of Justice (Mr Thomson) announced yesterday. This will probably mean that two new magistrates will have to be found for Christchurch, however, as there are effectively only six sitting at present. The senior magistrate (Mr W. F. Brown) has not appeared on the Bench since May, when he went overseas on sabbatical leave. Since his leave ended late last year he has been on sick leave, and is now in a Dunedin hospital. No decision has been made about Mr Brown’s future, although Justice Department officials have been considering the situation for several months. The decision to have eight magistrates was justified by heavier work loads with consequent delays in hearing defended cases, said Mr Thomson. The Christchurch magistrates also serve a large circuit and thev are regularly called upon to sit in other parts of rhe South Island. The additional appointment will provide much-needed relief not nnlv for Christchurch, but for courts elsewhere in the South Island.
