Aust.-N.Z. athletics to be axed?
PA Auckland New Zealand athletics circles are disappointed and annoyed at the probable cancellation of the AustraliaNew Zealand athletic meeting planned for Svdnev on April I. The Australians need 530,000 to run the meeting but say that they cannot find a sponsor. The two-day international was held for the first time in Auckland last March at New Zealand’s expense. It was agreed then that Australia would host this year’s meeting and pay the costs. “The Australians assured us that the meeting would go ahead and we agreed to the programme last August but now it looks as if they’ve gone back on their word.” said the New Zealand national athletics coaching director (Les Mills). If the meeting is cancelled, several New Zealand and Australian athletes could be deprived of a final chance to make their national teams for the Edmonton Commonwealth Games.
