Little fight in cycling
Paul Flattery's healthy starting! lead, and Bruce Brunton’s con-| vincing second day form won' the two juniors the series cupsl at stake in last evening’s track 1 cycling meeting at Denton Park. Flattery scored only one minor placing in the second pair of the four races for the H. and T. Cup but the five-point lead he enjoyed kept him clear of John Mullan’s late charge. Brunton had an easier task in! the B.A.L. Cup for B grade rid-i ers. Trailing John Stace by two’ points, he won both last evening’s two races. Stace was third in each. With the Canterbury team for •the Healing national champion-! ships resolved, the 10.000 m was shorn of much of its spice. After a negative race, with little aggression. Tony Duder, thej top junior, made full use of thej “lift” from the entrance to thej straight to take victory from! Frank Schaapveld. Shane Smith and Nick Purcell fulfilled their favouritism for the Tahak Cup in the novice pursuit! series. They qualified for the final on Sunday evening and Smith will start as favourite to retain the title. He was the fastest qualifier and in the slightly windier conditions for the second semi-final again went faster than Purcell, who was strongly pressed bv Martin Sanders in his semi-final. The same two riders were the anchor-men for the top Italian pursuit team, which went a shade over 2min in the difficult conditions, and with Steve Burdon, made things hard for the rest in the 4000 m scratch race. Burdon was caught leading out for the final Jap, and Purcell edged out Smith in the smart time of Jmin 34.25ec. Results: AMATEUR H. and T Cup. A grade.—Boom handican: G. J, Sutherland (60m) 1. M.
