Farmers seek help to pay for labour
Farmers at Cust and West Eyreton have called for Government assistance to help them employ more farm labourers. A remit on these lines was passed at a meeting of the provincial executive of the North Canterbury branch of Federated Farmers yesterday. Representing the Cust and West Eyreton districts, Mr G. N. Frazer said he felt that many farmers would need more labourers to bring about the increase in production that was being asked of them. “We feel that farm labour has become depleted in rural areas,” said Mr Frazer. The president of the provincial executive (Mr P. G. Morrison) agreed that production could not be increased unless farmers had more help on their farms.
Mr Frazer said that at present there was no recognition of the part farm fami-
lies played in taking workers into their homes to live. He suggested that tax incentives might encourage more of this sort of activity.
