Fine women’s golf field
Thirty-nine women golfers, all on single-figure handicaps, represent the finest field for “The Press” invitation tournament since its inception four years ago. The 54-hole stroke tournament, the first of this year’s major provincial events, will be held at Russley this week-end, two rounds being played on Saturday and the last 18 holes on Sunday morning. Included in the field are three former New Zealand match-play champions — Vai Cullen (Canterbury, 1970), Cushla Sullivan (Canterbury, 1974) and Uz Douglas (Invercargill, 1976). Mrs Douglas, the present national foursomes and stroke champion, is the only scratch golfer. The winners of the previous three tournaments, Sue Bishop (twice) and Sue Boag, are both competing. Miss Boag is the present Canterbury stroke, matchplay, and foursomes champion. Heather Ryan, from Puta- ! ruru, and Phillipa Mark, from Wellington, will be the North Island representatives. Miss Ryan, runner-up in last year’s New Zealand championship, and Mrs Douglas will be competing in the Australian open championship in Sydney the following week-end.
The leading women from Otago, South Canterbury, iNemon-West Coast-Marlbor-ough and all the prominent Canterbury women golfers add to a talented and competitive field.
