Rapanni dead

Invercargill The imported French-bred sire, Rapanni, which gained siring distinction through the deeds of Mister Pompous and Donna Paree, died this week in Southland at the age of 18 years. A well-performed racehorse, himself, he had stood at the Birchwood Stud on the outskirts of Invercargill for the last four seasons. The Rapace stallion succumbed to a twisted bowel attack, and although efforts were made to save him with an emergency operation, there was no hope and he died. He was struck down suddenly by the complaint and veterinarians were faced with virtually a hopeless task.

Rapanni, imported to New Zealand in 1968. initially stood at Sir Henry Kelliher’s Puketutu Island Stud. Auckland, and at that nursery sired Mister Pompous, New Zealand’s champion classic colt of his time, and the outstanding race mare, Donna Paree.

Nick! Rapace, Evander, Nashki, Grey Paree (Sydney), Hawaranee and others credited him with a respectable record as a sire and there has been a widespread demand for his fillies over the last two years. i
