Marble Point pools
Sir, —It has been said that the Ministry of Works is planning to take some of the rock from Marble Point for use at the intake of the Waiau irrigation channel. If this is true, the removal of the rock would ruin a natural beauty spot containing some of the best and safest swimming pools in the whole of the Waiau River. These pools are very popular among people from Hanmer Springs who know them. Would the Ministry of Works be prepared to assure the users of this beautiful spot that no rock will be taken from the point to its detriment? — Yours, etc., M. M. WILSON. February 15, 1978.
The District Commissioner of Works, Mr P. F. Reynolds, replies: “A contract has been let for the supply of rock required for the
Waiau irrigation scheme, the contractor being responsible for obtaining a suitable source. He has applied to the county council for a conditional use under its district scheme to enable him to obtain this material from the Marble Point area. The Ministry of Works is as concerned as your correspondent that proper consideration is given to the effects of this rock extraction, and has itself lodged an objection with the county council. The council now has to consider this and any other objections in accordance with the Town and Country Planning Act, and it would obviously be improper for me to comment further pending the council’s decision.”
