Cheaper concept of housing installation

The concept of Pinewood Modular Homes has been developed by Pinewood and Hardware Ltd specifically as a cheaper way of providing easy to install or erect homes. The homes, available in five attractive and distinctive styles, can be delivered either in whole lock-up shell form by trailer or as pre-framed kitsets for erection by the purchaser if desired. “The whole idea is to save on materials, labour and time through our home delivery service anywhere in the South Island,” the general manager of Pinewood and Hardware, Mr Cyril Beaufort, said. •‘We have looked for a project of building low cost housing and come up with this shell construction concept, which also lets the family build the homes themselves. "Besides larger families, it attracts young couples who cannot afford to build a whole, large home yet. Because of the modular design, they can always add to the initial unit and extend the size. "Of course, if a householder can erect the home himself, this will cut dov.n greatly on labour costs. The idea of do-it-yourself also appeals to younger couples who may be more adventurous and willing to give it a go. “Pinewood will complete the house and put in plumbing and power services, but if you want to do it all or any part of it. Pinewood will quote on that basis. “We did a pilot study of the shell concept through an advertisement just before Christmas and the response was overwhelming. “I believe the concept

of low cost housing will have to grow and one of our main aims is to reduce the gap between the money people are able to borrow and what can be done with it. “We have also started to live in the age of transportable homes and this i n-y a r d construction means a big saving to the household in travelling time and labour. “Pinewood have been in the timber milling business for generations and their experience and reputation is behind every home that leaves the yard,” Mr Beaufort said. The five basic designs now available are: “The Settler,” an attractive design that captures all the charm of early Canterbury homesteads. A holiday or permanent home with character. The traditional style verandah provides a pleasant outdoor living area. Double sliding doors give access from the living area and main bedroom. (10m by 6.6 m). “The Ranchline,” an ideal holiday cottage featuring low maintenance materials and clean, convenient interior layout. (9m by 6m). “The Pioneer,” a popular early cottage style which blends in beautifully with natural surroundings. Its features include a pleasant open living area and separate bedroom, plus a spacious loft that makes an ideal family sleeping area. Aluminium sliding doors from the living area and bedroom open onto a full length traditional style veranda. (B.lm by 6m1." “The Hilltop,” a cabin style holiday home that looks well in any setting,

or could be used as a farm cottage. (9m by 4.2 m). “The Glenbrook,” a clean, modern style home inspired by the Scottish crofter cottages. The Glenbrook module is available as a complete holiday home and also in a range of smaller sizes suitable as add-on rooms. Any number of modules can be joined by galleries to form an attractive and very liveable family home. ’ (7.2 m by 7.2 m). While these designs are more suitable for holiday or farm cottages, most lend themselves to future adaptation to complete family homes. All units are built to local body and loan institution requirements, and

Pinewood arranges all the necessary permits for the building and transportation of the homes. Finance can also be arranged through a reputable finance company. The homes will be delivered and located exactly on the prepared foundations by J. Curline Ltd using the latest hydraulic trailers and equipment. Top quality materials are used throughout the homes, including Rylock aluminium windows and doors and Weatherside textured finish exterior wall plank*. The choice of roofing materials includes Decramastic tiles, Harveytile, long-run corrugated iron, Dimondek or pre-painted Minidek.
