New standard for tractor frames

Wellington reporter A draft standard for tractor safety frames and cabs has been issued by the Standards’ Association for a public comment. It revises the 1967 standard, which was issued at a time when Sweden was the only country with any experience in testing tractor safety frames. The simple two-post rollbar type of frame was then becoming popular in New Zealand (and the Swedish tests were appropriate for his type. An interim stanlard was issued, with frame leformation limits based ipon the Swedish experi*nce.

Other tests have been developed since then, and the New Zealand standard was amended in 1970 to include a more severe impact test on the rear. The new revised draft I covers requirements of safety frames and safety cabs for wheeled tractors having a , mass of 762 kg or more. Tractors not designed to protect the driver tn tha event of the tractor’s over, balancing and those which offer only weather protection do not come within the scopa of the draft.
