Feeding frowned on at Auckland zoo
PA Auckland Public feeding of the animals at Auckland Zoo could soon be a thing of the past. At present the public can feed the animals where a sign does not expressly forbid it. But the director of the zoo, Mr D. Wood, recommended that the council change ’ its by - laws to prevent the public’s feeding any of the animals.
The move to prohibit feeding is a direct result of the recent sudden deaths of Dasher, a male zebra, and Kris, a male giraffe. Mr Wood said these deaths were two “completely tragic and unexpected losses” and a shock to all zoo staff. “And one always wonders in this sort of situation whether the deaths were caused by something they were fed,” he said.
